Evalutation Question4

Q4: How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Research

The research stages involved a lot of internet based resources that I could find as well as the notes I was taking in class. By being able to use a simple search engine, for example ‘Google’ to help out with questions that were needed to be answered saved a lot of time. This was my main recourse as well as the note taken. Wikipedia is often where I get me results from. However I have learnt to cross-reference because of the previous year in media. This means I have to find different factional results to back up the Wikipedia results to see if it is correct. Wikipedia can be unreliable because it is anonymous based.

Throughout this whole project I have used ‘Youtube.com’ without it would be so much harder to find and track down music videos that I am searching for. By looking at different types of genres being shown and how the artist is being represented I could not have achieved this without YouTube. When backing up my findings in the research it is so much easier to use copy the URL and put it on the blog.

A resource that was swiftly used but could not have been missed was Media Magazine. This was used when Suzy Davis was featured with an interview. She is a famous music video director and gave advice to current students. Google images were used a lot especially when it came to researching for the digi-pack. We simply typed in ‘Album Art Work’ and it gave us loads of results. This gave us huge inspiration into what we wanted to achieve for our own album cover. Once again ‘Google’ was used when searching for artists/bands homepages. Simply typing in and artists or bands name like: Rhianna or Rizzle Kicks it comes up with their homepage. I had to be careful as sometimes sponsored links pop up and you might be misleaded into believing that it is their real site.

Planning

At the beginning stages of planning our group constantly was meeting up to choose the correct song which we wanted to create our music video for. Using recourses like: YouTube, itunes, Spotifity, MTV music channel and even the radio to get suggestions of what our coursework was going to be based on. By our group deciding to create a genre questionnaire we could then go from there. The results from the questionnaire enabled us to minimize the options we had to choose from.

Location was a big factor, at the time we wanted to use a road which was being built which was near a member of the group, however at this time it was hard to get around to visit all the different locations that we needed to decide on. So to resolve this we used both Google and Google Maps to see which locations would be best to use. It was a better and efficient way of eliminating location’s that the whole group did not agree on.

When we decided to start planning our music video, we wanted to create a storyboard which we give us a mind set of what we wanted to achieve. Katie (member of my group) quickly made a storyboard set up which consisted of going onto Microsoft Word 2007, which allowed her too; add straight lines at equal measurements and add text boxes. We decided to leave the boxes empty as at this time we were not certain on what exactly we wanted to happen in the music video.

Available at school is the editing software ‘Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0’. However as both members of my group had problems with the software, we decided to look up different options that could be available for us to use whilst editing. By using the search engine Google we found an editing software that allowed us to have a twenty eight day free trial, which is plenty of time to film and edit our music video. This software was called ‘Ulead Video Studio.’

A very important planning feature we all used was different types of technologies. By using a group chat on facebook it was easy to communicate on what we wanted to achieve, which song was going to be used and many other factors. As well as using a social networking site, another way of how we all stayed connected was with our phones. Me and Katie both have Blackberry’s which comes with a free feature called BBM. This allows me and Katie to be in constant connection with each other for free of charge. As well as this I stayed connected to Kris by the form of texting. Without any of these technologies it would of been impossible for my group to be able to organise when to go and film.

Construction

The construction stages involved using Kris’s camera which was a JVC Everio GZ-MG3344 (G Series) which is a compact HD camcorder. We decided on using Kris’s camera instead of a schools camera so we could do the filming whenever we want to and didn’t have to wait for people to hand them back in. Or give them back in early so other groups could use them. This solved a lot of hassle as well as using Kris’s own tri-pod. When using a higher quality camera it did not blur when we wanted to use a quick zoom in when filming the ‘artist’. After filming we did not want to lose any of the clips so to back it up with firstly saved it onto the computer desktop, then onto my memory stick. We did not want to risk losing the shots that we had.

When trying to capture the artist mime and play the guitar he was finding it hard as he had nothing to play with. Subsequently we tried playing the music loudly out of my car which was parked nearby. However the CD that we burnt the song onto kept skipping which made it harder for him to complete a section of the song without stopping. We resorted to using an iPhone to play out the song so it was close to the artist for him to hear and play along to. We realised after the filming was complete that maybe some iPod speakers could have helped him out abit.

By using the software I mentioned earlier (Ulead Video Studio) this is where the editing stage took place.

The order of the frames was arranged by placing the clips of footage in the correct order that was wanted when discussed with the group. As Kris was mainly in charge of the editing as it was at his house we were always in constant contact in what was going to be achieved.

Another stage that was completed was ‘normalizing’ the sound to make sure the soundtrack was playing at 100% volume, that it should be at. The option to use the fade in and fade out effects which were used at the start of the video and at the end.

Post production effects played a major part in the editing stages. Colour enhancements and colour correction stages. By changing the colour for every clip used it have the same gloomy dark atmosphere which we wanted.

Time lapses were created by leaving the camera on the tri-pod for 10 minutes then speeding up the clip to make everything go quicker and get the overall effect.

A digital camera was used to capture the images for our digipack, for the digipacks we decided on going to various different locations to get the best chance of picking the  better images. After getting houndrads of potential images it was then the task of putting them onto the computer then looking through them all then a process of elimination discard the ones we did not like. In the editing process before we began editing, as a group had a discussion and wanted the images again to look dull. So when it came down to editing our chosen images, i simply put a black and white filter onto the image, aswell as this we added an effect called ‘watermark’ this had the affect of blurring on the images, which made it feel more authentistic.

Evaluation

During the evlauation stage i proudced different way of evaluating our 3 texts, including questionaires and video responses. I belive from all this feedback that we reached our target audience that we intended to. We also uploaded our video on Youtube and have recvied comments on our work.

Evaluation Question 3

Q3.  What have you learned from your Audience Feedback?

To gain constructive feedback, we decided to go to our target audience to see if they would watch our video and then fill out a quick questionnaire that we produced. This questionnaire consisted of 3 quick questions as we did not want to annoy our volunteers with an unnecessarily long questionnaire.

– What did you enjoy about the music video?
– What feedback would you give us to improve the video?
– What technical aspects of the video did you enjoy the most?

From asking 20 volunteers we received and collected the results, I have picked a few of the responses..

What did you enjoy about the music video?

  • “I enjoyed the concept behind the song, particularly with the interruption with the artist every once in a while, it works really well”
  • “I liked the range of shots and locations that were used, I really like the sped up sections, they look cool!”
  • “I enjoyed how everything flowed so smoothly, I did not once say to myself ‘what were they thinking? or ‘that really doesn’t work’ well done”

What feedback would you give us to improve the video?

  • “I would probably suggest using a better quality camera at some areas, or to at least re film some sections as they appear out of focus or blurry”
  •  “Some of the lip-syncing wasn’t quite in time towards the end”
  • “Go over some of the lip-syncing sections, and to improve the quality if possible”

For the next question we gathered the results and decided to put them into a pie chart form, this was because by first glance at a pie chart you can already tell which area was the most successful.

As you can see from the pie chart that most people enjoyed the different effect that where produced with 67% in second place was characterization with 17% and then in 3rd place was the range of camera angles with 16%.

From this we also decided to video some responses from our target audience:

Receiving this feedback indicated that there was a few changes that was needed to be made. We wanted to change the section where the lip-syncing did not quite match up with the lyrics which were being played. Even though the editing system we were using kept freezing, we tried the best we could in order to match the lip-synchronization as well as we could.

We then decided to disburse two more questionnaires out to our target audience, about our two other ancillary texts. The digi-pack and the homepage.

The digi-pack questionaire we used is posted below

We decided to share this questionaire with people from our target audience again. As this is who we are trying to appeal to, it makes sense to ask for their feedback, for our constructive critism.

Was the overall design of the digipack effective in what it was trying to achieve?

70% answered with ‘Yes’ | 30% answered with ‘No’

Were the fonts in use appropriate for the design, and did they fit in well?

75% answered with ‘Yes’ | 25% answered with ‘No’

Were the images appropriate for the context of the digipack?

100% answered with ‘Yes’ | 0% answered with ‘No’

Did you find the layout of the digipack to meet your expectations according to general conventions of an ordinary digipack design? 65% answered with ‘Yes’ | 35% answered with ‘No’

When concluding on these results as a group we were very happy with what the showed. These results represent that overall our target audience liked the digi-pack that we created. A comment was made from one of the voulenteers that “I thought the digipack was effective, I could even imagine it being sold within shops”. This was great to hear as it means we achieved what we set out to do. Although their was great feedback about this aspect there was a minor problem with the digi-pack, as when you open up the digi-pack there is a white line which goes down the middle. However this was due to the alignment of the design upon the template we were given, if I was to do this again I would take greater care to make sure the dimmensions are as accurate as can be.

We then did a questionaire asking about how effective our homepage was

Did the website offer you a good level of accessibility for you?

90% answered with ‘Yes’ | 10% answered with ‘No’

Was the content being offered through the website, to the standards that you anticipated on? 75% answered with ‘Yes’ | 25% answered with ‘No’

Was the star image of the artist effective and authentic? 80% answered with ‘Yes’ | 20% answered with ‘No’

Was the layout of the website easy to understand? 95% answered with ‘Yes’ | 5% answered with ‘No’

Evaluation Question 2

Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product & the 2 ancillary texts?

The three ancillary texts are very cohesive; it does not look like someone has grabbed 2 random photos and placed them on the digi-pack and the website. The outcome is that the products look like there has been real thought, preparation and research behind all of the texts which there has been.

One of the main combinations that hold the 3 texts together is the colour scheme. The colour scheme was based on a lyrical basis of what they represent. The lyrics show that a female has had a turn for the worst and is suggested that she is a prostitute and taking drugs. As of this the group decided to go with a colour scheme of vintage, black and white. We believed this would work well when making sure there were similarities between the video and the 2 ancillary texts. As the prominent connection between these products is the ‘artist’ we as a group thought the home page should just simply be of the artist himself. On the homepage a use of the edit of sepia is being used to distinguish between the digi-pack and the website. It is clear it is the same artist as the same pose is being used, with the artist playing the guitar.

The logo design was never settled on; we felt that the iconic guitar symbolisation was a good connection to use so the audience can relate back to it. However without creating an actual logo we did this by being consistent with the text font, style and colour which was being used. After searching through the website ‘Da-font.com’ we came across the text style we wanted called, ‘Mistral’. By keeping the text the same it adds some cohesiveness to the products so the consumers/fans can notice the artist straight away. A problem we had when replicating the digi-pack text onto the website simply did not show up properly as it faded against the background. To solve this we simply changed the text format to ‘Bold’ this made the text stand out and was more noticeable.

During this whole project my group and I have made and conscious effort to generate this ‘artist’ image into a commodity.  Most of this was done in the form of the homepage. This is where more of our inventive side could be shown, when thinking about what the fans want to see. We purposely made the homepage user friendly so the audience/fans could work their way around the site with ease. The website offers the users chances to buy a hard copy of the CD as well as some merchandise which we created. Also on the homepage is an option to buy tickets to see the artist ‘Ed Sheeran’ on tour, followed by a list of his tour dates and venues he is performing at. This potentially could create a profit margin for this ‘artist’. The homepage is a great way of getting new information about the artist out as well and everything he is doing. By making the digi-pack look appealing there is a stronger basis that people will want to buy the album.

Overall the video and the two ancillary texts are very cohesive. The branding of the text style being used helps create an authentic feel for this genre, as most ‘indie’ bands don’t have logos for their group.

Evaluation Question 1

Q1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MUSIC PROMOTIONAL PACKAGE USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE THE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF EXISTING MUSIC VIDEO/ PROMO PACKAGES?

Music video:

From completing the whole research stages it became clear to us as a group that we could not define the conventions of music videos. We believe this is the case as the music video conventions vary so much. This was obvious from watching various amounts of music videos. These included watching videos from different genres, artists, and videos with more artistic styles. We decided to look at different conventions used in these topics as it gave us a wider idea and more in depth detail of what we wanted to achieve. By looking at the different ways to incorporate the artist into the video and what represented our genre the best. There were many styles that we could of chose from including an artistic performance, also videos which are lyrical based which tell the story or a more commonly seen videos as a the artist/band performing. From this our group had some final meetings to decide on what direction we wanted our music video to go in. We came to the conclusion that we wanted to include the artist, and have a female character appear that would represent the lyrics in a more visual concept. A video that we could relate to was ‘Broken Strings’ by James Morrison, this represents the similar structure that we had wanted to use.

In the research stages looking through several music videos, it was obvious that in the editing stages or these professional videos that the colour had been changed. This seemed to portray a mood which was related to the lyrics of the song. When studying the lyrics to get the real meaning behind them, we found the song to be quite sad and dark, as if the girl had taken a wrong turn in her life. This was conveyed in the lyrics as she is suggested to be a prostitute. For this type of atmosphere the colours need to be darkened to show her life as being dark and not good. You would not see a sad lyrical song with bright colours and people dancing around, it doesn’t make sense. So in the editing stages we decided to alter the clips by draining the colour out of them, we did this by reducing the saturation and increasing the contrast to get the full effect of the darker colours within the shots. This made the clips very effective and went well with the overall effect we wanted to go with. When researching into the videos which conveyed a dark atmosphere like the video for City & Colour – Comin’ Home we tried to replicate the same effect it shows.

Another concept we thought about was lip-syncing. In most videos the artist/band is seen miming to the song. So to carry this convention on as a group we decided we wanted to incorporate a lip-syncing aspect into the video from the artist. From looking at videos such as The Script – ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ the artist is simply looking into the camera and miming. As a group we agreed on the simplistic effect of the artist looking into the camera would work well. As the song is quite slow and simple this would connect together well.

Another convention that we thought about in the group was involving in the editing stages. Often seen in fast paced videos the clips on the videos are cut in time with the beat. If we tried to do fast cuts for this video it would look silly. Our song is quite slow so this effect would look odd when editing it all together. Because of this our group decided to change frame after every strong beat which was played on the guitar. Below consists of a frame sequence from the video where by the frames change in time with the music.

As well as this another concept we had to consider was having the title of the song and the artist’s name appears on the video at some point. This often happens either at the start of the video or at the end. This is so that the audience know what the song and artist they were listen to, to go and buy the song. The video is an important way to branch out the song to the viewers. As a group we decided to have this being shown at the beginning of the video. We did this to show how our video is related to the consumer videos which are shown world-wide.

From researching into music videos it was clear for our group to discover that the structure goes – intro, verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, outro. The intro may consist of either at the beginning the start of the narrative concept, or goes straight to the artist. It is more commonly seen in our genre to start with some narrative or an effect which would then lead into the artist. The artist is most likely to be seen in the chorus section of the song. The audience will pay more attention to the chorus as this is where the song may become catchy and be most memorable. Relating back to our video, the artist is included in every chorus and the female character is represented in the verses section of the video. This is because the verses are commonly more seen to have some narrative performance happening throughout.

Music videos rely heavily on post-production affects, this is to ensure that the music video has the right feel and mood which is intended to portray. For example; the colour modification was used to dimmer the brightness of the clips to create a dark mood which is meant to be shown from the video (which has been mentioned before). As well as this post-production we used a technique in editing called a time-lapse, this is where in the editing stages the clips are fast forwarded to create everything moving quicker. From looking at different music videos, this effect looked good and was very effective. The time-lapse section of the video starts at 03:50.

Digipack:

When the group was doing research for designing the Digi-pack we had to keep in mind that we had to make all the three products cohesive.  For the front cover of the Digi-pack we decided to use an image of the artist who stars in our video. In our research we came across ‘Rizzle Kicks’ album cover. The simplexes of their album cover with the two artists sat there is what we wanted to re-create. When designing the album cover we want to make it simple to match the song and the video. With the artist sat on the floor playing the guitar it draws attention to the artist, which we wanted the overall effect to be. By having kris the ‘artist’ sit by a wall it shows the authenticity of what we were trying to create, it resembles what type of genre you would be listening to and the type of artist that ‘Ed Sheeran’ is.

For the inside of the digipack we wanted the girl character to appear here. This is another way of how the video is connected to this product. Continuing on the simplistic feel, we thought as a group a picture of the girl featured in the music video should also appear in the Digi-pack. From previous research we found a single cover from ‘Rhianna’ which went with the feeling of what we wanted to create. By looking into the camera it connects the audience with the song. The girl is looking sad in the photo to represent the harshness of her lifestyle that she is now living.

Back page of the digipack, again is seeing the artist doing what he does best by performing. This image gives the impression that he is ‘busking’ as Ed Sheeran is a relatively new artist he must have started like this at some point in his career. This gives the feel of authenticity towards the Digi-pack as the audience will believe that he has actually done this and not just been placed there for the effect of it. In the creating stages of the digi-pack it was important to add certain elements to the back page. We incorporated: a bar code, the company emblem, song tracks, and information regarding legality of the media content. Without a bar code the album cannot be scanned for it to be purchased at the till. For the company emblem we had to research to find what record label had signed ‘Ed Sheeran’, which was ‘Atlantic Records’. The songs listed simply allow the audience to see what the album has in store for them. As there are actually remix’s of our chosen song we decided to use these on the Digi-pack to add authenticity. Also it was essential that we added information about all the rights and regulations which have to be obeyed by as shown below.

Homepage:

For the homepage we decided on 5 main tabs which we could create pages for, this consisted of: Home, Discography, Tour Dates, Merchandise and News.

The first image which is seen on the homepage of this website, is the artist sat on the wall. As a group we decided on this image as in went well with the boarder which was chosen, and gave the authenticity intended by the artist playing on a wall. By using the white writing on the tabs and in the right hand corner the song stands out, which is what the artist would want the overall effect to have. (People to buy his album) We couldn’t have a bright, colourful on the first page as the 3 products would not be cohesive together.

The tour dates tab was very expectedly seen on every homepage that was researched. This was definitely a convention that we wanted to achieve. To make the website more authentic we created a poster with the tour dates on using the images used for the back page of the Digi-pack however with fewer effects on the image itself.

Another tab being mentioned and was very common was the merchandise tab. For our own homepage we researched into what was the most common things to sell. It came to overall result that t-shirts sold high along with jumpers and mugs. Because of this we decided to create our own merchandise for ‘Ed Sheeran’ by looking at other homepages for example the one of skrillex.

The final video

After months of research and filming this is the end product. I am very happy about the way this has turned out. The video looks very professional with the different angles we used and the diffferen effects we have put on in the editing stages. ‘The Time Lapse’ effect works very well and everyperson thinks its effective and good to look at.

Homepage Merchandise Page

From doing various amounts of research for the homepage it was clear that merchandising was a main section that needed to be included. Fans are the most likely ones who are going to purchase the items that are on the website. This is because the the fans will want to support their favourite band/artist. As a group we conlcuded on a few design ideas that we wanted to create which were most common on the homepages that we researched into including: hoodies, t-shirts, vests and mugs. Here are some of the examples that ae featured on the homepage.

T-shirt design

Vest design

Creating the Homepage

For the creating stages we are using a website builder called Wix.

When beginning to create the website as a group we needed to keep in mind the genre of our artist and the target audience we are aiming for.  We have chosen the colour scheme which will best connect with both the video and the digi-pack.

From previous research we discovered that most of the artists/bands have a live twitter feed and facebook news feed, we concluded that this helped connect the fans with the artist. Because of the fact it would make are website more authentic we agreed that we wanted to incorporate this into our homepage.

Band Homepage Research

A band homepage is a necessity it is a way in which artists/bands can connect with their fans. this can be done by putting information about their tour dates and news. It gives fans the oppurtunity to interact with their favourite artists as the majority of homepages have a forum linked directly to it which lets visitors ask questions. The website must contain all suitable content that relates to the song and artist for example; text, images, videos, audio, flash content etc. Before creating a band homepage it is essential that I do some research into what makes a good homepage.

One of the main fetaures of a band homepage is having pictures of the artists. This is promotional for the artist or band. Another advantage of having a homepage is if you are in a band, fans can go onto the homepage and find out different information about each person in the band. This allows the fans to feel closer to the band if they know more information about everyone who makes up the band. Photos are a great way for the aritst to get their overall actration out to the audiences and know what they were expecting to see, and hear from the artist/band.

Another way in which artists/bands would be connected would be the recent new fase on twitter and facebook. As seen in the picture below of our artist Ed Sheeran, he has a live twitter feed, this is a great way in which the audience can feel connected. By the audince having the feeling of knowing of what the artist is doing it makes the connection stronger.

Band/Artist homepages are iconic for selling their tour dates and merchandise. When looking at different websites everyone has some sort of shop or store to sell merchandise. Also following up with their recent tour dates which they are going and buying them off the website. This is a great way for the artist, and record label to make some profit. Bu getting their information more people will know about it which means more people will come and buy threw the website. When creating our website these are the things as a group we need to consider to make ours elligable and authentic.

Homepage other pages

As a group we sat down and decided on different pages which we wanted to incorparate into our own homepage this inluded: Home, Discography, Tour Dates, Merchandise and  News. This is so that the fan base can easily find what they need from the website.

The advantage of having tour dates on the homepage, is people can buy the tickets on this website and can clearly see where the artist/band is performing at, without having to go through other ticket websites inorder to get the tickets that are wanted. We created a poster which will feature on the homepage. This has made the homepage look authentic with the realality of the tour poster and dates being shown.

As mentioned before there we included  ‘Ed Sheerans’ live twitter feed, this will provide and up date information from Ed on what he is doing. This allows the audience to feel related to the ‘artist’ himself. As well as this a ‘Discography’ is included. This is where all the singles and albums will be found from the artist/band. Also where images and videos are stored in order to create authenticity, as this is what you would normally be seen on an actual homepage. The news tab at the allows the audience/fans follow  what the artisit is doing and where he is.

Editing Stages

When starting the editing stages we wanted to create cohesion between the music video and the 2 anciallry texts. The post-production part is where most of the editing will take place. At the end of this project we wanted to have 3 end products which all connected together.

We did this with by using an effect called colour correction. This technique is oftently used to change the apperance in various ways for example the atmosphere would be portrayed with darkness or lightness depending on the lyrics of the song. In the case of our music  the lyrics set a dark tone, as the lyrics state that the girl has had a hard life and is being portrayed as a prostitue. So to connnect this with the lyrics we decided to drain most of the colour and also added some contrast to enhance the blackness of the image. An example of the colour correction is shown below.

Another stage we had to think about was the timing of the cuts and frames. This relates to the tempo of our chosen song. If the tempo was fast paced you are more likely to see fast cuts being involved in the editing stages along with, the frames changing quickly on the strong beats. When looking at our song it was clear that it was not a fast tempo song, however quite slow. When coming to the editing stages we had to be careful to fit the timing right with the song, or the music video would not work, or look authentic. Me and my group resolved this by repeatedly listening to the song inorder to identigy where the strong beats where, and this is where the frame change would happen.

A different consideration we had to think about was lip-syncing. Our chosen song is heavily based on lyrics and the singing of the main ‘artist’ so we decided that the artist should be shown in various different angles and situations. We had to fit the miming in time with the song. This seemed to be more difficult as it sounds as the atrist was trying to play the guitar and lip-sync at the same time, without having something to play against. We wanted the artist to be able to do both to show an authentic and realistic video overall.

Time lapsing was another effecy we did in the post-production stages. We achieved this by leaving the camera in different location for 10 minutes orf longer to achieve the effet that we wanted. We left the camera for a certain amount of time ontop of a bridge overlooking a motorway. We decided to use two different angles overlooking the motorway as it have a different aspect of what the audience will be looking at. Another example of a time lapse is when we left the camera near a river where we filmed the sunset.
